This is what the Islamic spiritual leaders said after several hours of negotiations with the rebels.
The Nigerian junta is ready for peace talks with the West African regional bloc ECOWAS. This is what a group of senior Nigerian Islamic scholars said after meeting with the rebels, Reuters reports.
It was noted that the Islamic scholars spoke with the leader of the rebels, General Abdurakhaman Chiani, for several hours.
During the conversation, the head of the junta said that Niger and Nigeria are “not only neighbors, but also brothers who must solve problems peacefully.”
Before that, on Saturday, Chiani sent a delegation to Guinea’s capital, Conakry, to thank the country’s leaders for their support. This, observers say, could signal the junta’s desire to strengthen alliances as it opposes regional and other states, AFP reported.
“We are a pan-African people. When our people have problems, we are always there and always there,” Guinea’s Acting President Mamady Dumbuya said at the meeting.
It will be remembered that on July 26, part of the members of the Presidential Guard of Niger opposed President Mohammed Bazum. He was captured and removed from power.
Army General Abdurakhman Chiani was declared as the new leader of the country. The putschists also appointed their own prime minister. In response, West African countries have not ruled out the use of force against the military junta in Niger to restore legitimate authorities.
