Pope urges not to use grain as a weapon

The pontiff was alarmed at the problem of Ukraine’s grain blockade, which is affecting the lives of millions of people around the world.

Pope Francis condemned the ban on the export of Ukrainian grains. He said this at the conclusion of a general audience on Wednesday, June 1, according to Vatican News.

“The blockage of grain exports from Ukraine, on which the lives of millions of people depend, especially in the poorest countries, is extremely worrying,” the pontiff stressed.

He urged “do everything possible to solve this problem and guarantee the universal right to food.”

“Please do not use grain, the main food product, as a weapon in war,” – said the head of the Catholic Church.

Recall that Russian troops are blocking Ukrainian exports through the Black and Azov Seas, exacerbating the world’s food crisis.

So far, 1.5 million tons of grain are waiting in ports, and in total, about 20 million tons of old crops must be released in Ukraine to make room for new ones.
