Bilateral relations between Greece and Ukraine will be in line with the spirit of the G7 leaders’ declaration.
Direct negotiations were held between Ukraine and Greece to conclude a bilateral agreement on guarantees for the security of our country. The result should be the obligation of Athens to provide guarantees to Kyiv in several sectors, and not only in defense, Ekathimerini reported the previous day.
It is said that such consultations were held recently at the level of the ministries of foreign relations.
“On a broader political level, both sides are discussing the creation of a framework that will bring bilateral relations between Greece and Ukraine in line with the spirit of the G7 leaders’ declaration, and then the European Council will will continue long-term support for Kiev on a practical level,” the message said.
It is indicated that if these discussions are completed, issues defining specific aspects of the agreement will be considered, while the United States is also participating in these contacts.
In the area of security guarantees for Ukraine, Athens is expected to be eager to play its part, as “Kyiv respects in principle the jurisdiction and decisions of all international courts.”
Ukraine’s security requirements primarily include air defense, artillery, armored vehicles and fighter aircraft. The need for a steady supply of 155 caliber shells is seen in Athens as an opportunity to rebuild part of Greece’s defense systems.
As you know, at the NATO summit in Vilnius, the G7 countries adopted a declaration providing long-term support for Ukraine in the field of security and economy. Any country that at the bilateral level has officially agreed to provide certain guarantees to Ukraine can join this G7 declaration.
