The restriction was also introduced against three accomplices of the Lebanese official. Among them there is also a citizen of Ukraine.
The US, UK and Canada have imposed sanctions against the former head of the Lebanese central bank, Riad Salameh, and his closest associates. This was reported on the British government website.
Salameh and three of his accomplices withdrew $300 million from the Lebanese central bank for their own benefit.
“His brother Raja Salameh, former assistant Marianne Hoayek and former partner Anna Kosakova benefited financially from this corruption by filling their pockets with money belonging to the Lebanese people.
The media reported that Anna Kosakova is a citizen of Ukraine.
Britain’s Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord Ahmad, urged Lebanon’s leaders to urgently implement real reforms and fight the highest levels of corruption to set the country on the path to economic recovery.
According to him, corruption and lack of reforms led to a devastating economic crisis in Lebanon, which the World Bank called one of the worst in modern history. This caused poverty of more than 80% of the population. Lebanon ranks 154th out of 180 on Transparency International’s Global Corruption Perceptions Index.
Recall that the British government allowed sanctioned Russian oligarchs to spend money on private chefs, drivers and housekeepers, despite frozen bank accounts.
