MEP from the “green” Rasmus Andresen said he was completely disappointed that the supply of oil through pipelines had been removed from the embargo.
Members of the European Parliament criticized the EU countries ’compromise on the oil embargo as an inadequate measure against Russia. This was reported by Spiegel Online.
“Half-thought sanctions are giving Russia a deadly signal,” MEP Rasmus Andresen said.
“The EU needs to be more ambitious, but this is a step in the right direction,” tweeted Manfred Weber (CSU), head of the conservative group EPP.
The Vice-President of the European Parliament, MP from the Free Democratic Party Nicola Behr said the 27 heads of state and government had “failed to take a big step.”
“Because of the light oil embargo, EU member states have fallen short of expectations,” he said.
Social Democrat MEP Jens Geier welcomed the agreement but criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his longstanding opposition to the oil embargo. The fact that Orban has now obtained an exemption for delivery through the pipeline “is detrimental to the uniform line against Russian aggression,” he said.
Recall, the Office of the President of Ukraine said that the latest EU sanctions against Russia, which ban most of its oil imports, are not enough, and the pace of sanctions so far is too slow.
