According to local sources, the car, carrying two people, crashed into a pool full of alligators in Miami on Friday, resulting in a difficult rescue mission involving divers and police snipers.
Nives Matos, 80, and his son Mario Laza, 56, were driving on a highway in Florida when their vehicle lost control and overturned, swept down the road toward a swimming pool. WSVN 7 News says.
Several witnesses to the accident fell into the water to help, WSVN reported. Rescue teams followed, who eventually rescued the mother and baby from an underwater vehicle.
Snipers trained in the pool to protect divers from alligators, as seen in footage of a dangerous rescue operation conducted by WSVN.
Paramedics took both patients to a local hospital where Laza died. Her mother survived, however, according to local reports, in critical condition.
Laza “is someone you won’t forget by meeting once,” the Spanish translation says, according to the fundraising page. “He was a man full of life, laughter and good times, with a giant heart and a unique personality.”
