Sabrina Singh, deputy spokeswoman for the Pentagon, said this at a briefing for journalists.
The President has given the green light to allow and support the training, a US Department of Defense spokeswoman said.
She was unable to provide any additional information, but stressed that Denmark and the Netherlands play a leading role in the training of Ukrainian pilots.
Since the beginning of 2023, the Ukrainian authorities have been actively asking Western countries to start supplying Ukraine with modern fighters, including American F-16s. In July, US National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby said Ukraine would likely receive the aircraft before the end of the year.
In July, Politico reported that a coalition of 11 countries, led by Denmark and the Netherlands, was ready to start training Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16, but could not do so without official permission from the United States.
Joe Biden, according to media reports, back in July at the G7 leaders’ summit told allies that he approved of the training. They were expected to start in the coming weeks, but this never happened.
In August, CNN wrote that European countries had not handed over the final plan to the United States, so there were proposals to send pilots to training at an air base in Arizona.
