The enhanced surveillance regime will operate in Ludza, Kraslava, Augshdaugava counties and Daugavpils.
The Government of Latvia has decided to strengthen border security with Belarus for six months. On Tuesday, August 8, LSM reports.
“For six months, from August 11 this year to February 10 next year, border security will be strengthened in the administrative territories of Ludza, Kraslava, Augshdaugava and Daugavpils,” the statement said.
It is indicated that the decision was made to ensure the inviolability of the Latvian state border and prevent threats, “given the extremely large number of cases of illegal attempts to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border and the trend towards its growth.”
“Enhanced monitoring of the Latvian-Belarusian border by border guards with the support of the armed forces and the police will be implemented from August 11, 2023 to February 10, 2024,” the journalists specified.
It is reported that since August 11, 2021, more than 14,000 people have attempted to cross the Latvian border illegally, including 5,461 people from January 1, 2023 to August 7, 2023.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania intends to close two of the six checkpoints on the border with Belarus to reduce the risk of provocations and threats on the border.
