Putin signed a gas trade order for rubles

“Unfriendly countries” need to open ruble accounts in Russian banks, Vladimir Putin explained.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law establishing a new procedure for payment for natural gas for “unfriendly countries.” It was learned on Thursday, March 31st.

Putin announced the signing of the law at a meeting with the aviation industry. According to him, “unfriendly countries” need to open ruble accounts in Russian banks.

If such payments are not made, then the Russian side will consider it as default. Then the existing gas contracts will be terminated, Putin said. The new law will take effect on April 1.

Recall that on March 23, Putin ordered to transfer payments for gas in rubles. Prices and volumes on previously concluded contracts will not change, only the payment currency will change.

But on the eve of the German government said that after yesterday’s talks between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Putin, Russia agreed not to demand payment for gas in rubles.
