The Russian army was so weak that it did not have the strength for a significant offensive, but in the winter it established very effective defense lines and dense mines.
The Ukrainian military has gained more ground in the past few weeks than the Russians have in the entire past year. This was said by the head of the British Armed Forces, Admiral Tony Radakin. His words were reported by The Guardian journalist Dan Sabbath and James Landale from the BBC.
Radakin described the Ukrainian strategy as “staring, stretching and pounding” to gradually break Russian defense lines.
He also noted that Ukraine has yet to launch a full-fledged counter-offensive.
“It is unfair to think or tie Ukraine to deadlines. The counteroffensive has never been a single action, there are also economic and diplomatic ones,” he added.
According to Radakin, over the past few weeks, Ukraine has gained more positions than Russia did last year. At the same time, the Russian army was so weak that it did not have the strength for a significant counter-offensive – in 18 months of fighting they lost about 2000-2500 tanks.
He also noted that Ukrainian fighters are effectively using Storm Shadow missiles. Although they were relatively poor, they defeated the Russian air defense.
In addition, Radakin said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not yet broken the defense lines.
“We expect Ukraine to bring some of the second-tier forces it has,” he said.
Also, the invaders had very effective defense lines and the thickness of the mines. Among other problems, he called the lack of air cover and the fact that Ukraine did not receive all the necessary equipment.
As reported, on Tuesday, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced an advance of up to 2 km in the direction of Berdyansk.
Recall that in the past week, the Armed Forces of Ukraine increased the area of liberated territories in the east and south. It was also learned about the successes of the Ukrainian army in the direction of Bakhmut.
