Unfortunately, our Chinese colleagues have informed us that the scheduled dates next week are no longer possible and we must now look for alternatives, Speaker Nabila Massrali said in a written comment, Reuters writes.
This is the second time Borrell’s trip has been cancelled. He was unable to come in April due to testing positive for COVID-19.
Borrell was scheduled to visit Beijing on July 10 and meet with his Chinese counterpart to discuss “strategic issues”, including human rights and Russia’s war against Ukraine, the EU ambassador to China said on Sunday.
Ambassador Jorge Toledo told the World Peace Forum in Beijing that China and Europe are likely to have two face-to-face dialogues in September, one on the economy and trade and the other on digital issues ahead of the leaders’ summit later in the year.
We want to engage with China, but we need progress, and we need it this year, Toledo said.
Recall, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on the EU to reduce its dependence on China.
