Potential Russian intelligence agents posing as Brazilians have recently attracted the attention of US, Greek, Dutch and Norwegian intelligence agencies.
In Brazil, the investigation began due to the emergence of information that Russian spies are actively using the passport of this country. Recently, at least three such cases have been reported. On Sunday, July 2, The Wall Street Journal wrote.
The newspaper wrote that in June 2022, Dutch intelligence discovered the Russian spy Sergei Cherkasov. He tried to get a job as an intern at the International Criminal Court in The Hague under the guise of Brazilian citizen Victor Müller Ferreira. He was exposed and now Cherkasov is serving a 15-year sentence in Brazil for using false documents.
The publication also points to another well-known case – Norway’s detention of Russian Mikhail Mikushin in October 2022, who, under the name of Brazilian Jose Asis Jammaria, worked at the University of Tromso.
Another case – a Russian spy who pretended to be Brazilian Gerhard Daniel Campos Wittich, living in Rio de Janeiro, doing business. Subsequently, he suddenly disappeared, and a few months later, Greek intelligence identified him as the Russian Shmyrev. It is known that he fled to Russia with a female spy, who all this time lived under a false name in Greece.
“All these cases prompted the Brazilian authorities and counterintelligence to launch a major investigation to find out if Moscow is using Brazil as a kind of” incubator “of its spies trying to infiltrate the West,” wrote the WSJ.
The publication said there may be many Russian spies posing as Brazilians.
Earlier it was reported that in Switzerland a third of Russian diplomats are suspected of espionage.
