Last year, the company participated in almost an eighth of Russian offshore gas exports. Advisor to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky Oleg Ustenko accused Shell of receiving “blood money”, and the company responded by saying that agreements with the aggressor country are the result of “long-term contractual obligations”, so the sanctions are not violated. It is reported by the BBC.
It is noted that on May 9, a huge tanker is capable of transporting more than 160 thousand cubic meters. m of gas compressed into liquid form, left the port of Sabetta in the far north of Russia. This cargo was purchased by Shell and headed to Hong Kong, China.
And from the Kpler database it follows that this was one of eight shipments of Russian gas acquired by Shell in 2023. Last year, Shell accounted for 12% of Russia’s offshore gas trade and was one of the top five Russian-origin gas traders in 2022.
Recall that in May the European Union announced that they were able to overcome dependence on Russian energy carriers thanks to the EU plan to reduce gas consumption. Brussels has stopped importing Russian coal, and Russian oil will be only a fraction of what it was before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
