The ten heads of state of the European Union held an informal meeting on the sidelines of the European Council meeting and discussed the future of the EU, especially its enlargement. On Friday, June 30, it became known on the Euractiv portal.
The meeting was reportedly initiated by France, Germany and the Netherlands. The leaders of Belgium, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden were invited there.
Politicians discussed the issue of “how to manage the enlargement process” of the EU while considering the question of its future members.
The participants of the discussion came to the conclusion that among the problematic issues accompanying the enlargement of the EU, there remains, in particular, the transition from unity to the voting of a qualified majority, the functioning of the internal market of the EU and changes in the budget. , the impact in some areas, in particular agriculture, as well as the introduction of freedom of movement.
“This is the first time that EU leaders have actually sat down at the negotiating table to discuss this issue,” Euractiv said.
EU leaders are expected to continue discussions on necessary reforms and preparations for enlargement at an informal summit in Granada, Spain, in October.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that she supports the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union in mid-December this year.
