Ukrainian authorities disclosed to CIA Director William Burns the details of the return of territories occupied by Russia.
During a secret visit to Ukraine by CIA Director William Burns earlier this month, Ukrainian officials discussed with him the liberation of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, as well as the start of negotiations ceasefire in Moscow. On Friday, June 30, The Washington Post wrote, citing its own sources.
Burns’ previously unreported trip included meetings with President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior Ukrainian intelligence officials.
The purpose of the visit is to reaffirm the US administration’s commitment to sharing intelligence that will help Ukraine defeat the enemy, the sources said.
In private conversations, the Ukrainian military leadership assured Burns that closer to the fall, the Armed Forces of Ukraine “can recover a significant territory”, move artillery and missile systems to the border of Crimea under control of Russia; move further into eastern Ukraine and then start negotiations with Moscow.
“Russia will only negotiate when it feels threatened,” a senior Ukrainian official told Burns.
The CIA did not analyze the counteroffensive.
Earlier, the CIA said they were willing to recruit Russians who were dissatisfied with the war.
