Ursula von der Leyen explained that the EU took funds from the “airbag” in the budget to support Ukraine and now it needs to be filled.
EU finance ministers will discuss the allocation of additional contributions to the EU budget. The reason for this is that the European Commission has used EU budget funds in the amount of 30 billion euros for the period until 2027 to provide assistance to Ukraine. This was announced by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the last press conference of the EU summit on Friday, June 30.
The head of the EC answered a question about Hungary’s refusal to make additional contributions to the EU budget.
Note that on June 20, the European Commission announced a request to the 27 EU member states to make additional contributions to the EU budget for 66 billion euros for the period until the end of 2027.
“Over the past 16 months, we have already taken 30 billion euros from the EU budget to financially support Ukraine, not to mention other types of aid. These are funds from the “airbag” that exists in budget. It has been exhausted, so the political issue we must answer: how we can further support Ukraine. Additional contributions are not discussed now, we will discuss them with the finance ministers in the near future, ” he says.
It will be recalled that Hungary once again blocked the payment of a tranche of military aid from the European Union to Ukraine in the amount of 500 million euros.
As previously reported, the European Council expanded funding for the European Peace Fund by 3.5 billion euros. Usually, the money from this fund goes to the needs of the Ukrainian army.
