In the Ukrainian capital, an environmental activist from Sweden met with President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of an international working group on the environmental consequences of the war. These experts will work to assess the impact of the fighting on the environment, in particular the scale of ecocide after the Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak announced this on Telegram.
Together with the activist, former Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, former European Commissioner for the Environment Margot Wahlstrom, former President of Ireland, former head of the International Institute for Environment and Development Mary Robinson and Vice President of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala arrived in Kiev.
During the meeting, Zelensky drew the attention of the interlocutors to the catastrophic consequences of the explosion of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which the residents of the Kherson region faced, since this crime by the invaders caused significant damage to the agricultural sector and the biodiversity of the region.
Recall that Greenpeace stated that due to the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, 32 objects with chemicals, oil and gasoline were flooded – these are oil refineries, gas stations, thermal power plants and warehouses. Environmentalists emphasize that this will have a negative impact on the habitat of fish, birds, amphibians and animals in general, as well as pollute their habitat.
