Roberta Metsola said she was optimistic “given the statements she heard from the leaders” of EU member states.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that she supports the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union in mid-December this year. He said this at a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, June 29, Politico reports.
Metsola noted that the EU must “fulfill commitments to start negotiations.”
“Ukraine’s reform efforts have been extraordinary, especially during the war. If the reform standards are sufficiently met, we must respond. And I remain optimistic that this will be achieved this year,” said Metsola.
Answering a question about Ukraine’s application to join the bloc, the President of the European Parliament said he was optimistic “considering the statements he heard from the leaders” of EU member states.
“We hope that the European Council in December will be the place or time when this step (the beginning of accession negotiations – Ed.) can be taken,” he said.
Metsola added that the EU should take a step on its side as soon as the reforms in Ukraine are completed.
Earlier, Metsola said that he was very impressed with the “progress made by Ukraine regarding the recommendations of the European Commission.”
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky called the start of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine to the EU.
