The issue of Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance will become relevant after the NATO summit.
Questions about Ukraine’s future membership in NATO will be discussed after the summit in Vilnius.
This is what NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, June 29, in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.
“After the NATO summit, we will discuss Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership. And I am very sure that the allies will send a very strong signal of support to Ukraine,” he said before the start of the meeting of EU leaders , where he was invited.
Stoltenberg recalled the consensus of all members of the bloc that its door is open, that one day Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and not Russia, but that the allies and Kiev will decide when the time is right to give the Ukraine of full invitation.
“The most important thing now and the most urgent is to support and ensure the preservation of Ukraine as a sovereign country in Europe. If we cannot do this, there is no point in discussing the issue of membership like this,” the NATO Secretary . General said.
Recall that the Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal to the participants of the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will be held on July 11. The participants of the summit called to recognize the inability of Ukraine to pass the stage of the NATO Membership Action Plan and make of a strategic decision to invite Ukraine to NATO membership.
