American and European officials have recognized, amid recent developments in Russia, that decisive action is now needed.
The United States of America will soon approve the decision to transfer the ATACMS long-range missile system to Ukraine. American and European officials believe that these missiles can change the course of Kyiv’s struggle with the Russian invaders in their favor. This was stated by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, June 29.
ATACMS has a range of about 300 km. This was enough for Ukrainian forces to hit Russian targets far behind the front lines. President Biden did not sign the transfer, in part because US officials fear Ukraine could use it to strike Russian territory and escalate the conflict.
Officials said the issue was being considered at the highest level. US and European officials have seen signs that the White House, previously reluctant to give in, has decided that the Ukraine conflict needs to be urgently stepped up in the coming weeks.
However, against the backdrop of internal turmoil in Russia, where at the weekend the founder of the PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin staged a so-called “revolt”, US and European officials recognized that now was the time to act decisively.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, said that the United States “changed its tune” on the supply of long-range ATACMS missiles for Ukraine.
As we wrote earlier, on June 9, members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, representing the Democratic and Republican parties, announced the introduction of a resolution calling on the administration of President Joe Biden to transfer the ATACMS long-range missiles in Ukraine.
