President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law “On the use of the English language in Ukraine”, which provides for formalizing the status of the English language in Ukraine. Project No. 9432 normalizes the peculiarities of the use of English in the work of government bodies. The corresponding document has already appeared on the website of the Parliament.
English is the language of international conferences and sports competitions, the communication of the international scientific community and the leader among languages on the Internet. Now more than 1.5 billion people are learning English in the world, the document says.
The bill proposes to define the categories of positions, candidates for which are required to speak English. It also normalizes the peculiarities of the use of English in the work of state and local authorities, local governments, units of emergency assistance to the population, when crossing the state border, in the fields of education, culture, transport, healthcare, etc.
The explanatory note states that now English is the official language de jure in 58 of the 196 countries of the world, and de facto in a number of other countries and territories.
