This follows from the text of the decision of the Higher Regional Court of Vienna in criminal cases of June 14, which is at the disposal of the publication DW.
The text of the decision of the Vienna court states that Firtash has the status of an adviser to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to international organizations in Vienna since 2021. It is on the basis of this status that Firtash demands to stop the extradition procedure in the United States, citing diplomatic immunity.
In October 2021, the businessman’s lawyers handed over to the court a legal expertise prepared by one of the Western European professors of international law.
At the same time, the Austrian Ministry of Justice told the court that Firtash was not properly accredited to UNIDO and did not have a corresponding accreditation card from the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the embassy, the Belarusians in Austria did not answer what Firtash does in the status of an adviser.
Recall that Firtash was detained in Austria in March 2014 at the request of American investigators, but released on bail of 125 million euros, after which he appealed his extradition to the United States. The oligarch faces up to 50 years in prison and confiscation of all assets.
