Japan can export military equipment if the purpose of its use is rescue, transport, surveillance or demining.
The Japanese government intends to allow the export of some types of military equipment against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by Kyodo.
Consultations were organized where the government explained to the ruling parties that some weapons could be exported without violating the country’s strict arms export regulations. Unarmored cars and trucks, observation vehicles and minesweepers of the Self-Defense Forces are named as examples of products allowed to be exported.
The meeting, where representatives of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party were informed about the possibility of a partial export of military equipment, took place in May, as reported by a government source.
Japan can export military equipment to countries with which it cooperates in the field of security if the purpose of its use is rescue, transportation, surveillance or mine clearing.
According to Defense Minister Yasukaz Hamada, the government will decide whether lethal weapons can be transferred on a case-by-case basis. Earlier too, the government promised to promote the export of defense equipment to create a strong and sustainable industry in this area.
It was previously reported that Japan is negotiating with shells for Ukraine, and that Japan will transfer TNT to the US for shells for Ukraine.
