Ukraine continues to reform its armed forces during the war against the Russian Federation, drawing attention from London.
The UK is ready to support Ukraine’s accession to NATO under a simplified procedure. The Guardian reported this on Wednesday, June 21, citing the statement of British Foreign Secretary James Claverley.
It has been smartly mentioned that Britain will support the proposal that Ukraine does not have to pass the Membership Action Plan (MAP) stage to join the military alliance.
“I think the British position would be very, very supportive if we move away from the membership action plan, recognizing that the cases of both Sweden and Finland do not require it. The Ukrainians have shown their commitment to the reform of Armed Forces and have proven themselves in combat in the field. And I think all NATO allies recognize this,” said Cleverly.
The MAP process sees candidate countries receive assessments and advice as they take steps towards achieving NATO standards in defense and other areas.
If Ukraine actually skips this stage, it will be placed in the same category as new NATO member Finland. In contrast, North Macedonia implemented the MAP for 20 years before joining in 2020.
Remember, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba criticized the possible creation of the Ukraine-NATO Council. According to him, Ukraine in the future should become a full member of NATO, and not just a privileged partner.
