The former head of the National Bank is considered to be involved in the theft of more than 200 million hryvnias.
The Office of the Prosecutor General has sent a request for the extradition of the former head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Kyrylo Shevchenko, who is suspected of embezzling funds from Ukrgasbank. NABU Director Semyon Krivonos said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“As far as I know, such a request was sent through the Office of the Prosecutor General, but at the moment I cannot say the result achieved,” he said.
According to Krivonos, the issue of extradition may arise because of the war.
It will be recalled that on October 4, 2022, the head of the NBU, Kirill Shevchenko, announced that he resigned for health reasons, and on October 6, it became known that a case was opened against him in NABU and SAPO. On the same day, he was removed from the position of head of the NBU.
On October 23, NABU placed the three defendants in the case on the wanted list Ukrgasbank, including the former chairman of the NBU. They are considered to be involved in the theft of more than 200 million hryvnias.
The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court arrested the former head of the NBU in absentia. Shevchenko was placed on the international wanted list. He faces up to 12 years in prison.
It is known that Shevchenko lives in Austria. The former head of the National Bank sought political asylum in the country.
