Businessmen and politicians who have fallen under the sanctions are hiding from justice through various means.
Expensive yachts linked to Russia’s sanctioned oligarchs are no longer reporting their location to an automated global locator, The Guardian reports, citing The Observer’s investigation.
In particular, after the invasion of Ukraine, a select yacht associated with Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev disappeared from the global tracking maps used to determine the location of maritime traffic (AIS).
It was at least one of six luxury yachts linked to UK-sanctioned Russian oligarchs, according to investigators.
At least 13 such vessels, worth nearly £ 2bn, have been confiscated since the invasion of Ukraine. In the latter case, the Amadea yacht, believed to be associated with billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, was taken on behalf of the United States.
Yachts killed include the location:
-
The 72m Clio yacht associated with Oleg Deripaska. He sailed from the Indian Ocean to Turkey after the Russian invasion. The last place of migration was on April 18 in the Black Sea, which will be reached by the Russian ports of Sochi and Novorossiysk.
-
The 70-meter Galactica Super Nova, associated with oligarch Vagit Alekperov, the former president of Lukoil. The last reported position of the ship was on March 2 off the coast of Croatia.
-
The 140m Ocean Victory is associated with sanctioned oligarch Viktor Rashnikov, who last gave his whereabouts in the Maldives on March 1st.
Journalists were able to contact one of the crew of the yacht owned by the sanctioned oligarch. He said they were ordered to keep information about his whereabouts.
Earlier in Britain, a superyacht exploded and sank.
