It is reported on June 16 by Reuters. The agency’s journalists witnessed how the delegation arrived in Kyiv by car (before that, African leaders visited Bucha), and then African politicians entered the hotel to take advantage of the shelter.
After the air raid ended, a spokesman for the South African president tweeted that the African leaders’ mission was going “well and according to plan.”
In Kyiv, members of the delegation visited Mikhailovskaya Square, where destroyed Russian military equipment is located.
On Friday, June 16, an entire African “peaceful” delegation arrived in Kyiv, which will leave for Russian St. Petersburg the next day.
It is headed by the Presidents of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and Senegal, Macky Sall. It also includes the leaders of Zambia and the Comoros. Egypt, Uganda and Congo are represented by prime ministers and officials.
African leaders can offer a range of “confidence-building measures” to Ukraine and Russia, Reuters writes, citing a draft African framework document.
It lists a number of measures that may be proposed to the parties:
- withdrawal of Russian troops;
- withdrawal of Russian tactical nuclear weapons from Belarus;
- suspension of execution of the warrant for Putin’s arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC);
- weakening Western sanctions against the Russian Federation.
