The document will be signed by Alexander Lukashenko after the approval of the upper house of parliament – the Council of the Republic.
The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus adopted in the second, final reading the draft law on the people’s militia. This was reported on June 15 by BelTA agency.
The document defines the people’s militia as armed formations created from volunteers who have expressed a desire to participate in the enforcement of martial law in the territory of their administrative units of residence.
Voluntary groups will be formed by local authorities. The general leadership of the people’s militia will be carried out by the local defense council, the direct leadership of the detachments – of the territorial bodies of internal affairs.
“The law provides for the storage of weapons with a volunteer, they will be kept at home, the procedure for the storage of these weapons will be determined by relevant documents and resolutions of the Council of Ministers ,” Yevgeny Zaitsev, a member of the Standing Committee on National Security of the House of Representatives, said.
Recall that in May last year, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, ordered the creation of people’s militia units in the country, which, when martial law is introduced, will become a territorial defense reserve, and, if necessary, will become partisan formations.
In early March 2023, the republic’s Security Council approved the draft law on the town’s militia.
The Minister of Defense of Belarus, Viktor Khrenin, said that the number of people’s militias, which will be formed from people who are not subject to mobilization, including women, may reach 150,000 people.
