In the North Atlantic Alliance, consultations are still ongoing on what the wording of the Vilnius summit will be about the upcoming accession of Ukraine to the Alliance. Member countries have not yet agreed on a position on the mechanism for Ukraine’s movement into NATO, but have agreed on a number of key positions. This was announced on June 14 by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a briefing.
The allies came to an agreement regarding Ukrainian membership. We agreed that the doors of NATO are open… We also agreed that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance,” he said.
According to the Secretary General, thanks to Western assistance, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched a counteroffensive and, moving forward, liberate the territories occupied by the Russians.
Stoltenberg added that ministers will discuss this week how to bolster NATO’s defenses with new regional plans to defend allied territories with forces on high alert.
Recall that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg positively assessed the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but stressed that one should not expect significant success on the battlefield right now.
