Because of the incident, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic cut short his participation in the reception of the Russian Embassy in Belgrade.
Serbian law enforcement announced the detention of three armed Kosovo police near the border between the two countries. Pristina said the police were kidnapped. The Serbian channel RTS reported this on June 14.
It noted that Kosovo police officers were discovered and detained by the anti-terrorist unit of the Serbian police “deep in the central part” of the country. They brought automatic weapons and GPS devices and were fully equipped.
Serbia’s interior ministry said it had thwarted “an attempt by the so-called Kosovo police to attack central Serbia.”
Against this background, President Aleksandar Vucic cut short his participation in the reception of the Russian Embassy in Belgrade and went to his residence.
In turn, Kosovo’s Interior Minister, Celal Svechla, said that Kosovo police officers were abducted by Serbian security forces, which invaded the country.
“Undoubtedly, our police officers are deep in the territory of the Republic of Kosovo, at a stationary checkpoint, performing their usual duties,” he said.
Svechla urged the international community to intervene.
As you know, the relations between Serbia and Kosovo worsened due to the protests of the Serbs in the northern municipality. Politicians of Albanian origin won the midterm elections there.
On May 26, clashes broke out between police and Serbian protesters in the northern region of Kosovo, who refused to recognize the results of regional elections. Tensions culminated on May 29 when local Serbs clashed with soldiers from the NATO KFOR mission in Kosovo.
The EU has suspended high-level visits and financial support to Kosovo due to Pristina’s failure to achieve de-escalation.
