The prosecutor’s office said the former executive was accused of illegally obtaining Samsung data to build a competitor company in China.
The former head of South Korean company Samsung Electronics has been charged with stealing technology from a Chinese chip company. This was reported by Reuters.
The former head of the tech giant is also reportedly charged with intent to endanger South Korea’s national economic security.
The prosecutor’s office said the former executive was accused of illegally obtaining Samsung data in favor of building a rival facility in China, 1.5 km away from the Korean chip company’s facility.
The data theft is estimated by prosecutors to have cost Samsung at least $233 million in damages.
The defendant, who worked for 28 years for South Korean chip manufacturers, has denied his guilt, and Samsung Electronics has not commented on the situation.
Six other individuals have reportedly been charged with involvement in the theft, including an inspection company worker accused of leaking Samsung’s semiconductor business architecture plan.
An attempt to build a new plant using the stolen data in 2018-2019 reportedly ended in failure due to funding issues.
Earlier it was reported that Samsung is launching a global line of smart monitors.
