Each Leopard 2 is literally worth its weight in gold for a decisive offensive, Andrei Melnik said.
Ukraine needs more Leopard 2 tanks amid inevitable losses during the counteroffensive, and Germany may provide additional weapons. This is what the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Melnyk, said, ntv reported on Monday, June 12.
“The Ukrainian army needs more Western battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other armored vehicles… Each Leopard 2 is literally worth its weight in gold for a decisive offensive,” said Melnyk, former ambassador of Ukraine in Berlin.
In his opinion, the Bundeswehr is able to provide more than 18 units that have already been delivered from its stocks, of which there are more than 300. The current number can be “tripled without compromising Germany’s ability to defend itself,” he said.
Melnyk also requested that “another 60 Marder infantry fighting vehicles” be given to the Ukrainian army.
CDU security politician Roderich Kiesewetter supported Melnik’s request.
“The Allies will immediately replace all destroyed equipment – including Leopard battle tanks and armored personnel carriers – and bring in additional equipment,” he said.
Free Democratic Party military politician Markus Faber said “clear statements to replace missing material” could “support the attacked in their offensive.” For example, the Bundestag decided to replace the Leopard 2 charges in service with the German armed forces. “This is where we can increase the number to help,” Faber said.
Melnyk also reiterated a request for Germany to provide Taurus cruise missiles and help build a strong Ukrainian air force. Ukraine is waiting for Germany’s “strategic decision regarding active participation in the fighter coalition to enable Ukrainian pilots to train on Eurofighters and provide some of the more than 130 aircraft.”
Recall that Germany is considering the supply of fighter jets for Ukraine and may reconsider its position, which previously made it impossible to provide such military assistance. This is what German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said.
