NATO members need to send a strong signal to Russia as Ukraine launches a counter-offensive, the sources said.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish President Andrzej Duda will travel to Paris on June 12 for talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting will focus on Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership and security guarantees from allies ahead of the Alliance’s summit in Vilnius in July. This was reported by Politico, citing sources.
The publication notes that last week Macron called for providing Ukraine with “reliable, concrete and tangible” security guarantees and said that Ukraine should be offered “a path to NATO membership.”
In turn, Scholz made a more cautious statement, saying that the focus should not be on membership, but on how individual countries can support Ukraine.
At the same time, Poland has repeatedly called for reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. On Tuesday, Duda met with NATO leaders in Eastern Europe to discuss the war and Ukraine’s request to join the Alliance.
The publication says that there is now a widespread understanding that Ukraine cannot join the Alliance while there is a war with Russia. At the same time, NATO members disagree on how they should respond to Ukraine’s current aspirations for membership.
According to an anonymous French diplomat, NATO members need to send a strong signal to Russia at a time when Ukraine is continuing its counteroffensive.
“If we cannot find a solution that satisfies everyone, there is a risk that we will not go… to a statement, and this is clearly the biggest gift we can give to Russia,” the diplomat said.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky is demanding a clear algorithm for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. He said this when addressing the participants of the Bucharest Nine summit.
Zelensky also called the condition for his participation in the NATO summit in Vilnius.
