The candidacy of the future Secretary General of NATO has not yet been agreed between all members of the organization, as such a decision is made by consensus.
US President Joe Biden does not exclude that the United States will support the candidacy of British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace for the position of NATO Secretary General. On Thursday, June 8, writes Ukrinform.
“Maybe,” he said, answering a reporter’s questions about whether it was time for Wallace to lead NATO.
He added that the candidate is “very qualified”, but there still needs to be a consensus on this issue within the Alliance.
“Their (British – ed.) candidate is very good, but there will still be many discussions between us and within the Alliance to decide who it is,” he added.
Remember, the current Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, should have stepped down from this post on October 1, 2014 last year. However, due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, his term of office was extended until September 30, 2023.
Recall that on the eve of President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he will not participate in the July NATO summit if there are no security guarantees or signals for membership in the Alliance.
