The press service of the Holy See said that after the planned operation, the pontiff will remain in the hospital for several days.
Pope Francis is scheduled to undergo surgery under general anesthesia on Wednesday, June 7th. This was reported by the Press Service of the Holy See.
“After the general audience, Pope Francis went to the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital, where in the morning he will undergo a laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prostheses under general anesthesia,” the statement said.
The operation for the 86-year-old pontiff became necessary because of “a postoperative hernia that causes recurrent, painful and subocclusive syndromes.”
Francis will remain in a medical facility for several days, the press service of the Holy See said.
The previous day, the pontiff underwent a medical examination at this hospital. On Wednesday morning, Francis held a general audience and drove the popemobile to St. Peter’s Square, greeting the faithful.
This is Francis’ third hospitalization. In July 2021, he underwent bowel surgery at the same hospital. Then he stayed there for ten days. At the end of March 2023, the pontiff was hospitalized with bronchitis, but he was discharged three days later.
The pontiff has difficulty moving because of the pain in his knee, he usually does it in a wheelchair or with a stick.
It will be recalled that on March 29, the 86-year-old Pope Francis was hospitalized for a routine examination. It was later learned that the head of the Roman Catholic Church had a respiratory infection, but not a coronavirus.
