Germany, along with Leopard 2 tanks, handed over to Ukraine modern armor-piercing ammunition DM53A1.
The news was published by the telegram channel NMFTE.
Ukrainian operators of Leopard 2 tanks received one of the most powerful armor-piercing ammunition of the German army DM53А1 manufactured by Rheinmetall.
In the video, a soldier demonstrates unpacked ammunition with inscriptions from transport containers, presumably in the process of loading them into the ammunition rack of a combat vehicle.
The DM53 is a German armor-piercing sabot projectile developed in 1999 by the defense company Rheinmetall.
“Military” writes that this projectile is capable of hitting all the most modern armored targets. During the design, the developers specially adapted the ammunition to overcome modern models of dynamic protection, including 4S22 “Kontakt-5”, which are now equipped with most Russian tanks.
The projectile is designed specifically to achieve maximum efficiency when fired from the extended L55 tank gun, which is armed with Leopard 2A6 tanks. When fired from a cannon, the DM53 is capable of reaching speeds of 1750 meters per second and penetrating up to 750 mm of homogeneous armored steel at a distance of 2000 meters.
The upgraded DM53A1 ammunition differs from the original by using a new brand of SCDB gunpowder, the combustion characteristics of which do not depend on atmospheric temperature. This ensures consistent internal ballistic performance over a wide temperature range.
The DM53A1 core is made of WSM IV tungsten alloy. Its weight is only 5 kilograms, its length is 685 mm, and its diameter is 26 mm.
At the end of May, the Ukrainian military tested Leopard 2А6 tanks at one of the training grounds by shelling captured Russian T-62M tanks. On the published footage, the military demonstrated the results of shelling a target and a section of broken T-62M armor.
