The Council of the EU recognized Shakutin as one of the top businessmen who benefited from the Lukashenka regime.
The Court of General Jurisdiction of the European Union upholds the sanctions against an associate of the formal leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko – the businessman Alexander Shakutin, who sought to cancel them. This was stated in a press release from the court on Wednesday, June 7.
“The court rejects Mr. Shakutin’s claim and therefore upholds the restrictive measures applied to him,” the statement said.
Sanctions on Shakutin were imposed after the presidential election in Belarus in 2020. The Council of the EU recognized them as not complying with international standards.
With business interests in construction, engineering and agriculture, Shakutin benefited from privatization during Lukashenka’s tenure as president. In addition, he is a member (or former member) of the presidium of the pro-Lukashenko public association Belaya Rus and the Council for Entrepreneurship Development.
Recall that the previous President Volodymyr Zelensky implemented the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on new personal sanctions against 51 individuals and 220 legal entities from Russia and Belarus.
