The Ministry of Defense believes that NATO should provide a list of steps to be taken with a clear confirmation that Ukraine is a legitimate candidate.
Ukraine aims to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance within a short time after achieving a military victory over Russia and is seeking such a guarantee at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Gavrilov said in an interview with Politico.
According to him, NATO should give Ukraine a list of steps to take “with a clear confirmation that Ukraine is a legitimate candidate” for membership in the Alliance.
“We would like to hear a plan, a roadmap or a list of actions to be taken by both sides – NATO and Ukraine – to achieve membership in a very short time,” Gavrilov said.
He admitted that Kiev’s membership in the Alliance is impossible while a full-scale war is going on, “at the same time, we must understand that after our victory, our process (joining) the bloc will be very, very short.”
Accordingly, added the deputy head of the Ministry of Defense, Ukraine will negotiate with NATO a “system of security guarantees” for a transitional period on membership in the Alliance – in particular, the obligations of the NATO countries to help Kiev win the war, support for the Ukrainian economy, as well as support for sanctions and other forms of pressure on Russia.
It will be remembered that earlier, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not be fast, because there are still disagreements on this issue. However, the Alliance is ready to support Ukraine.
