The Kremlin is trying to use these operations to support ongoing information campaigns and gain internal support for a long war.
The reaction of the Russian authorities to the second invasion of the Russian Volunteer Corps in the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation indicates an increase in anxiety in the space and information society of Russia. This was stated in the ISW report on the results of Thursday, June 1.
“The responses of Russian officials and military correspondents to the operations in the Belgorod region indicate that increasing anxiety about the war in Ukraine is reflected in the Russian information space,” the analysis said.
Thus, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to receive information about the situation in the Belgorod region. In addition, Putin awarded the head of the Shebekinsky district with the Order of Courage for responding to the border situation.
In this regard, the authorities of the Belgorod region announced the evacuation of 200 children in the Penza region and plans to evacuate another 600 children in the Kaluga and Yaroslavl regions on June 3.
“All this indicates that the Kremlin is trying to use these operations to support ongoing information campaigns aimed at portraying the war in Ukraine as existential and gaining local support for a protracted war,” added of the Institute for the Study of War.
It was noted that some Russian bloggers used the situation in the Belgorod region to criticize the Russian leadership, while others argued that the limited invasion was a harbinger of Ukrainian counteroffensives.
