On cigarettes they will write: “Tobacco smoke is harmful to children”, “Cigarettes cause leukemia”, “Poison in every puff”.
Canada is the first country to announce that it will require manufacturers to put warning labels on every cigarette and other tobacco product. This was reported by the government’s press service.
The new rules will take effect on August 1, 2023 and will be phased in over 2024-2025, starting with the largest cigarette sizes.
In particular, the following phrases will be placed on cigarettes: “Tobacco smoke is harmful to children”, “Cigarettes cause leukemia”, “Poison in every puff”.
“New guidelines on the appearance, packaging and labeling of tobacco products will be part of the Government of Canada’s program to help adult smokers quit, protect youth and non-smokers from nicotine addiction, and reduce the attractiveness of smoking,” the government explained. .
Labeling individual cigarette filters, cigarillos, pipes and other tobacco products would make it “virtually impossible for a smoker to avoid health warnings,” Canadian officials said.
The decision is part of Canada’s goal to reduce tobacco use in the country to less than 5% by 2035.
Recall that last year Ukraine launched a platform where you can report smoking in public places and other violations of anti-tobacco laws.
