In May 2023, 1 million 141 thousand tons were transported for export by rail of Ukraine, which is almost half of what was in April (2 million 126 thousand tons). This was reported by the information and analytical publication Rail.insider.
“In addition, in May, grain loading on Ukrzaliznytsia networks decreased to 1 million 372 thousand tons. The share of grain decreased to 13% of the total volume of cargo. The daily average load was 44 thousand tons. In At the same time, there is also a positive trend: In the last week of May, the average daily load increased to 50-69 thousand tons (before that, its volumes varies in the range of 30-35 thousand tons),” the report says.
Valeriy Tkachev, Deputy Director of the Commercial Work Department of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, explained that the positive dynamics is mainly due to the fact that the grain corridor continued to operate, in particular, it had a positive effect on the removal of products grain in the ports of Big Odessa: on May 31, it reached 46 days, and a week before – 181 wagons.
It was also reported that last week there were days when even 650 wagons per day were unloaded, but it was not yet possible to reach the “normal” indicators (about 1 thousand wagons per day) due to the fact that Russia does not coordinate the passage of ships in the South port.
Recall that in the current marketing year (MR) – from July 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023 – Ukraine exported 45.29 million tons of grain and legumes.
