This is reported by Reuters, citing statements by the Taliban and Iranian state media.
The incident comes amid tensions between the two countries over water rights.
Iran has accused the Afghan Taliban of violating a 1973 treaty by restricting the flow of water from the Helmand River, which has its source in Afghanistan, to Iran’s parched eastern regions, but the accusation has been denied by the Taliban.
Today, in Nimroz province, Iranian border troops opened fire towards Afghanistan, which was met with a counter-reaction, Abdul Nafi Takor, spokesman for the Taliban-controlled Afghan Interior Ministry, said.
According to him, now “the situation is under control” and Afghanistan “does not want to fight with its neighbors.”
According to the speaker, one person died on each side and several were injured. However, the official Iranian news agency IRNA later reported that two Iranian border guards were killed and two Iranian civilians were injured.
According to Iranian media reports, the Iranian authorities closed the Milak-Zaranj border checkpoint, which is the main commercial border crossing point, after the clash.
Afghan journalist Tajuden Sorush posted on his Twitter page a video circulated by the Taliban showing that the Taliban had come close to an Iranian base in the border area.
