Greece supports Hungary in blocking new European Union sanctions against Russia.
Along with Hungary, new EU sanctions against Russia have now been blocked by Greece. Politico reported this with reference to five EU diplomats.
The European Union is discussing the 11th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. If the previous ten packages of sanctions were aimed at taking measures against the Russian economy, now Brussels wants to make it impossible to bypass its sanctions.
In an unprecedented move for the EU, the current package of sanctions could target other countries that could help Russia avoid a trade embargo.
However, Hungary and Greece are jointly opposed. The publication explains that Ukraine has compiled a list of private companies that are considered “war sponsors.” The list includes several European companies. Budapest and Athens are using the lockdown as political leverage to delist their companies.
The Greeks reject the suggestion that their companies are evading anti-Russian sanctions.
“Greece reiterates that if there is concrete evidence of sanctions violations, they should be communicated to the relevant Member States at a technical level so that it can be properly investigated and then take appropriate action,” said one to diplomats.
We remind you, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, previously said that the new package of sanctions in the EU will affect 90 companies that helped Russia avoid the economic restrictions previously imposed against it.
