This was stated by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
This week, the Dutch authorities said they want to start training Ukrainian pilots in F-16 fighter jets as soon as possible. Earlier, Rutte and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the creation of a coalition to supply combat aircraft to Ukraine.
However, when asked by journalists whether the Netherlands themselves would send F-16 fighters, Rutte said that no decision had yet been made on this, and that it would depend on the consent of Washington.
President Joe Biden told G7 leaders last week that the US would support a joint effort to train Ukrainian pilots. The White House also made it clear that it would not block the re-export of F-16s to Ukraine from other countries.
Rutte said the start of the training mission is an important milestone, but discussions about actually sending the planes should take place separately.
Rutte acknowledged that the Netherlands has a fleet of F-16 aircraft, which are planned to be replaced by fifth-generation F-35 fighters in 2024, but he responded with restraint to direct clarifying questions from journalists about the delivery of F-16s to Ukraine, CNN notes.
