Budapest, Hungary (AP) – Hungary has declared a legal “dangerous situation” in response. Russian War In neighboring Ukraine, the prime minister said on Tuesday that he had allowed the pro-right nationalist government to take special measures without the participation of the legislature.
In a video posted on social media, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the war in Ukraine was a “constant threat to Hungary” that “endangers our physical security and threatens the energy and financial security of our economy and our families ”.
In response, he said a “state of war” would take effect on Wednesday, allowing the government to “respond immediately and protect Hungarian and Hungarian families in every way possible.”
The move comes after Orban’s ruling party passed a constitutional amendment on Tuesday that allows the threat to declare legal status in neighboring countries in the event of armed conflict, war or humanitarian disaster.
A special legal ordinance allows the government to pass resolution laws without parliamentary review and allows for the temporary suspension and repeal of existing laws.
The Hungarian government has taken similar steps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, amid many critics and legal observers who say they are giving the government the power to rule. The special legal order expired on June 1st.
The Orban government has been accused of violating democratic freedoms in Hungary since it came to power in 2010 and used state resources to strengthen its power. The ruling party, Fidesz, won a fourth consecutive election on April 3, giving Orban, the EU’s longest-serving leader, an additional four-year term.
In a statement released Tuesday, Emes Pastor of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union wrote that the Hungarian government has “re -adapted the rules of the game to its own needs.”
“By constantly acknowledging the possibility of the introduction of a special legal order in the future, it will lose its special character.” This will be a new rule that will put at risk the fundamental rights of all of us and the management of by decree would greatly reduce the importance of parliament, “the parish priest wrote.
Government orders issued by special legal order are valid for 15 days, unless extended by the Hungarian Parliament. Orban’s party, Fidesz, has held a two-thirds majority in parliament since 2010.
