Brussels said it was able to overcome dependence on Russian energy thanks to the EU plan to reduce gas consumption. On May 25, the speaker of the European Commission, Tim McPhee, stated this during a briefing.
Over the past year, Europe has realized its ambitions according to the plan after the end of dependence on Russian energy carriers. Now we can say that we are no longer dependent on them,” he said.
An EC spokesman said that the European Union had stopped importing Russian coal, and Russian oil would be only a fraction of what it was before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. McPhee also stressed that natural gas from Russia is rapidly disappearing from the European market.
Recall, on the eve of the media reported that the European Commission recommended the governments of the European Union to stop measures to support energy prices until the end of 2023. This is necessary in order to control public finances and comply with the new budget rules in 2024.
