The leader of the “Wagnerites” announced that he had begun the withdrawal of units from the city.
We are withdrawing combat units from Bakhmut. […] By June 1, the main part will be relocated to the rear camps. We transfer positions to the military. But if it gets hard for the military, we will leave those who played the main role in the capture of Bakhmut,” the entry published in the telegram channel of his press service says.
Prigozhin announced the capture of Bakhmut on 20 May. The Ukrainian authorities have not officially confirmed the surrender of the city, but this week, references to the hostilities in Bakhmut disappeared from the reports of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to Prigozhin, the withdrawal will be carried out until June 1, after which the positions in the city will be transferred to the Russian military.
Note that this is not the first time Prigozhin has announced the withdrawal of PIK from Bakhmut. The first time he threatened this was on May 5, but he never brought it out. He said that in the General Staff of the Russian Federation he was threatened with charges of treason for leaving positions without an order.
In a recent interview, Prigozhin said that the detention could last until June 10.
Previously, experts suggested that the withdrawal of PIK from Bakhmut would create a big problem for the Russian command, since it would have to look for reserves to plug the hole. And, accordingly, this gives a serious advantage to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in terms of the impending offensive.
Prigozhin himself made it clear in an interview that he intended to withdraw the Wagner PIK from Bakhmut in order to create problems for the Minister of War Shoigu and then, in case of failures at the front, to achieve his resignation.
