The foreign ministers of Germany and Hungary argued over the role of the Hungarian OTP bank in Russia’s war against Ukraine during a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. This was reported by Politico, citing anonymous sources.
Note that Hungary has refused to approve an increase in EU military aid to Ukraine until Kyiv removes the company from the list of international sponsors of terrorism. In addition, this dispute has delayed new sanctions against Russia.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto reiterated Budapest’s position in a closed-door meeting, but German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock contradicted him. In particular, he referred to the message that OTP Bank recognized the territories of Lugansk and Donetsk regions occupied by the Russian Federation contrary to international law, and also that the institution opened credit lines for the military of Russia.
Hungary and the OTP bank itself have denied the allegations. They called these messages “incorrect” and added that the institution’s leadership was allegedly “expressing support for Ukraine.”
The exchange came after other countries such as Sweden and Estonia also pressed Budapest on the issue during the meeting.
Recall, the Italian news agency ANSA reported that on Monday, May 15, Hungary blocked the allocation of the eighth tranche of funds from the European Peace Fund for the purchase of weapons intended for Ukraine.
