Meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Defense and military commissariats are held in Russian universities and colleges, during which students offer to conclude a contract for military service.
Last week, similar meetings were held in secondary specialized educational institutions. In particular, in the Tula College of Economics, the Ryazan College of Technology, the Murmansk College of Economics and Information Technology, and the Vladivostok Shipbuilding College.
The talks are organized as career guidance events. Students of the last courses or graduates are told how contract service works, how much contract servicemen can earn, what benefits they can apply for.
Previously, similar events were held in universities. In March, students of the Institute of Information Technologies, Mathematics and Mechanics of the Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod met with representatives of the Ministry of Defense. The purpose of the meeting was called “increasing the prestige of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
I learned about the meeting from the headman, and she from the dean’s office, – a student, one of its participants, told the BBC. “I decided to go because I think that working with the state, working for the state or serving the state is practically the best prospect possible, and at the meeting they talked about this.”
The conversation lasted about half an hour. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense made it clear that the places of service will be determined by the department. The topic of a “special military operation,” as Russia demands to call the war with Ukraine, and service in the territories declared by the Russian authorities as new regions was not raised at the meeting, the source told the BBC.
No one was able to go into details, because if there was a desire, then you need to go to the military registration and enlistment office, where everyone will be told and shown in colors and details, ”he described.
On the Contract Service website of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the salary is indicated only for employees in the zone of a special military operation – from 204 thousand rubles per month (depending on military rank, position and length of service).
Those who signed a contract at the same time for a period of a year or more promise to pay another 195 thousand rubles. Payments to employees in other regions are not discussed in the section on monetary allowance.
A similar meeting took place last week at the Irkutsk State Transport University. At the end of March, a conversation was organized for students of the Kuban State Technological University with representatives of the military commissariats of the Krasnodar Territory.
Similar events took place before the war. However, recently the Ministry of Defense has expanded the number of educational institutions where campaigning takes place.
In addition, non-standard methods of recruiting for the war appeared. The BBC wrote about how subdivisions of the Zhilishchnik budgetary company place ads looking for “guards” – in fact, candidates were offered to sign a contract to participate in the war in Ukraine.
Recently in Russia, it is now possible to sign a contract for military service immediately after graduation – in April the State Duma adopted amendments allowing 18-year-old graduates to enter the service. Campaigning began in some schools, students were handed out leaflets “Contract service is a worthy future” with the contacts of the Ministry of Defense.
