The American leader will “continue to reaffirm the strong and steadfast support of the United States for Ukraine in the future.”
US President Joe Biden will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Japan on Sunday, May 21, where the two leaders are at the G7 summit. CNN reported this, citing a senior White House official.
“We expect that Biden will have a bilateral meeting with Zelensky a little after 2:00 pm local time (1:00 am Kyiv time),” the official said.
According to him, Biden “will continue to reaffirm Ukraine’s strong and stable support from the United States in the future.”
He also referred to a “powerful statement of unity” by G7 nations opposed to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine at the summit, including sanctions and announcements of a joint effort to train Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilots.
Asked whether China could play a role in ending the war with Russia, the US official said the US hoped Chinese leader Xi Jinping saw the G7 summit as a signal of “determination”.
Earlier, Zelensky summed up the first day of the G7 summit, saying that it will provide more opportunities to defend against Russian aggression.
